Sep 28, 2006. #16. i use the re20 and SM7 for vocals all the time. pretty much exclusively in the last 2 years. generally - the re20 is more open. the sm7 is thicker. i prefer the sm7 most times though the re20 with a dense pre is cool. the re20 can get kinda edgy/peaky depending on the pre.

The outer grille stops you from getting close enough to the capsule, to where a lack of understanding of mic control, could get you to need a compressor to limit peaks.

Jul 28, 2023 · I use a Shure SM7B microphone, Focusrite Scarlett Solo (3rd gen.), DM1 Dynamite Preamp and Roland RMC-B10 cable. This is connected to a MacBook Pro M1. I have the Gain on the microphone input set to 50%, this allows me to speak into it comfortably from a distance of about 8cm (3.15 inch). At this setting, however, I find the hissing noise too loud.

Nov 29, 2006 · While my two used SM7's are neither vintage, nor rare, they both have a nice heritage: The first was from Bruce Sweiden and may have been used by Michael Jackson at some point, although it is not "the" SM7 that Michael used on Thriller. It still has the blue and white Dymo label with Bruce Sweiden's name on it.
