1. It is somewhat a close relative of "ok" or "I am following". More like when someone is telling/informing you about something you'd says "hmmmm" to indicated that you're following what is being told. "Ummm" on the other hand means that you are thinking trying to recall or a find an answer to something, usually a question.
Is 'hmmm?' an interjection? If not, what is it?
May 21, 2016 · 1. on the other hand, I see Collins also gives 'hmm' as an interjection when the meaning is 'expressing doubt or reluctance to agree', it isn't the same meaning as I would give to 'hmm?' which is more 'please explain?', but perhaps it still covers it.
