While licensure requirements vary by state, completing a nursing education is the first step to becoming a registered nurse. In most states, the minimum education requirement for an RN license is a diploma from an accredited RN program; however, many aspiring nurses earn an ADN or a BSN.

Becoming a registered nurse requires candidates to complete at least an associate degree in nursing (ADN). However, many employers now look for applicants with a bachelor's of science in nursing (BSN). Students should think carefully about their major, as state boards of nursing set specific prerequisites for awarding a nursing license.

Many registered nurses attend nursing school to learn the fundamentals of becoming a nurse. They may hold a nursing degree such as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc) or a Masters in Nursing (M.Sc). You also need to pass an examination from the university or the Nursing Examination Board.

RNs usually hold a diploma, associate degree or bachelor’s degree in nursing. After completing the degree or program, they must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) to become licensed RNs. Although NPs all begin as RNs they must go on to complete a master’s or doctoral degree and additional clinical training.
