My dad had 2 cool cars back in the '60s- a 1963 Volvo P1800 and then a '66 Pontiac 2+2 (Catalina) with 421ci HO. Nowadays, try as you might, trucks (even with Hemi's and hood scoops) and SUV's (even with 22" tires and chrome rims) just aren't cool.

The 62 got replaced by a 65 98 - which Mom hated because it was slow and heavy. Then in 1970 Dad came home with a Toronado GT with the hot 455 in it. The car was beautiful, luxurious, and, quick - in a straight line. The Toro was the last Olds Dad ever owned. One evening in 1977, he left in the Toronado, and, came home with a new BMW 530i. I agree that $8k for a 2003 MPV with 47k miles is a great deal. Last spring I paid about $11k for a 2002 MPV with 44k miles and thought I got a great deal. Assuming your dad takes good care of his cars, all maintenance is up to date etc., and you like how it drives, I would grab it if I were you.

Log onto auction companies like Barrett-jackson.com and mecum.com auctions. they keep archives on line so you can look for old auctions where they sold cars.

Now that I think about it, those cars were kinda cool. My relatives did have big GMs when I was a kid. Lemme think, my grandparents had a '60 Catalina wagon, traded for '69 Kingswood Estate (green, with 396, hidden headlights, all power options), wrecked and replaced with an orange '73 Bel Air wagon with a white interior.

That said "dad's" CR-V is loud compared to anything I've had lately or any of "mom's" recent cars. CR-V v. Buick Regal, BMW 525i, Lincoln MKZ, or Mercedes E-class isn't really a fair comparison though. If I owned a CR-V it would be the loudest car I've ever owned. So maybe we're just not that noise sensitive.

There are many cars I would like to see in diesel, that exist elsewhere in diesel, that we are not blessed with on these hallowed shores. I think something like a new style Honda Fit/Jazz diesel would be pretty cool, moreso if it could exist with AWD. I like diesel engines, but what we have at the moment in the NA market is pretty bland.

Our problem is to what cars we should use. My kids are 2-1/2 and 7yrs old. The suburban is the biggest but kind of old (1988), mpg is ~15 on hwy, AC doesn't work, some power windows doesn't work Also has a 05 Toyota Avalon and 07 Highlander. Thinking about the highlander since it probably hold more stuffs.
