Some people develop cutaneous reactions with pruritus (itching) and (most commonly) 2–5 mm red bumps. Purpura, petechiae, vesicles, urticaria, pustules, localised infection, and (rarely) anaphylaxis may also develop. Hypersensitivity reactions may develop in some who become sensitised to bed bug saliva.
You may have hives, a fungal infection, or heat rash, all which cause red bumps to appear and can easily be mistaken for bedbugs. If you aren't sure, look for signs of bedbugs to confirm that you have been bitten, or seek out advice from your doctor.

Although rare, there have been isolated case reports of systemic allergic reactions to bedbug bites. Reactions typically included hives, asthma, and in rare occasions, anaphylaxis. In addition, constant scratching of lesions caused by bedbug bites may lead to secondary infections, such as impetigo, folliculitis, or cellulitis.

Some of the tell-tale signs that your rash has been caused by a bed bug infestation are:

    • Brown or dark specks on bed linen that are from dried blood or bed bug feces.
    • Shed skins that are yellowish.
    • Small tiny eggs about the size of a pinhead.
    • A distinctive musty odor from the bed bugs.
