The checkmark, known as the “Verizon swoosh,” represented speed, connectivity, and forward progress. The bold, italicized letters in the wordmark conveyed a sense of dynamism and modernity.

The check mark on a sent message is that the Verizon cell phone has recieved the message. There is no way to tell if the phone owner has read the message. Note the check mark does not appear for cell phones on other providers or messaging services controlled by computers (i.e. facebook or twitter).
