  1. This appendage accumulates blood during AFib events and if a blood clot is formed inside this appendage it can be dislodged and travel to the brain causing strokes. The ligation/clip is to prevent blood clots to be detached from the inside of this appendage. It is not a cure for AFib.

    Cerebral aneurysm is a condition in which a blood vessel weakens or balloons. Rupturing of blood vessels causes bleeding in the brain, leading to a hemorrhagic stroke. Aneurysm clipping and coiling treat a hemorrhagic stroke. In aneurysm clipping, a tiny clamp is placed at the base of the aneurysm that stops bleeding. In aneurysm coiling, a catheter is inserted through the blood vessels to the point of aneurysm where a coil is released. Because of the coil, a blood clot is formed that blocks blood and prevent aneurysm.

    Johns Hopkins is currently the only center in the mid-Atlantic region offering LARIAT as an option. Patients who have had prior cardiac surgery are not candidates for this procedure. A CT scan will need to be performed to make certain that the left atrial appendage is not too large or has an unusual location that precludes placement of this device.
