  1. On-Ear vs Over Ear: Over-Ear headphones are second best at providing passive isolation, being able to block a decent amount of ambient noise without active cancellation. On-ear headphones, on the other hand, do not perform as well. The typically smaller ear cups rest on the ears and do not always create a great seal.

On-ear headphones have smaller faces which rest against your ears. They do not surround your ears. Over-ear headphones have larger cushions with sufficient space to accommodate your ears entirely within them. The inwards pressure that headphones inevitably exert is distributed on your head in the area around your ears.

To conclude, over ear headphones are a clear winner if you prioritize comfort, noise isolation, sound quality, and noise cancellation. On the other hand, if you tend to carry your headphones everywhere you go, consider getting a proper pair of on ear headphones.

Generally speaking, over-ear headphones are the best option for attenuating outside environmental noises. The seal they provide around the entirety of our ears makes them particularly effective at blocking out background sounds. Earbuds that rest in our ears’ conchae don’t provide much of a seal and thus allow for more noise to enter our ears.
