Aug 4, 2015 · I presume that most people refer to ¶ as a "paragraph symbol" because that is what MS Word tells them it is. If you show paragraph marks and other hidden formatting symbols in Word, (in Word 2013, Home > Paragraph > Show/Hide Editing Marks) you'll see the Pilcrow sign delimiting all of the document's paragraphs.

Having a neurology background, where "paraplegia" and "paraparesis" are common terms, I still use "paragraph" exclusively. The language is evolving, and para will become more and more mainstream.

Both of them seem fine. Do these two phrases only differ in popularity? I think "in the preceding paragraph" is used more widely. Or "in the preceding paragraph" is more formal?
