    Venezuela was named by Europeans during the 1499 Alonzo de Hojeda expedition. A tranquil bay was described as "Little Venice" or "Venezuela" and the name stuck. Venezuela as a nation has a very interesting history, producing notable Latin Americans such as Simon Bolivar, Francisco de Miranda, and Hugo Chavez.

    Venezuela achieved full independence as a separate country in 1830. Throughout the 19th century Venezuela suffered political turmoil and dictatorship, remaining dominated by regional caudillos (military strongmen) until the mid-20th century. Since 1958, the country has had a series of democratic governments.
