  1. Left atrial appendage (LAA) closure devices are implantable cardiac devices which are placed in the left atrial appendage for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation who have contraindications to pharmacological anticoagulation. Depending on the device they may be inserted percutaneously or though minimally invasive or open surgery.

LAAO devices are implanted in the heart and are intended to reduce the risk of thromboembolism from the left atrial appendage (LAA) in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. The device mechanically occludes the LAA to prevent LAA thrombus from entering the systemic circulation.

Left atrial appendage closure is a surgical or minimally invasive procedure to seal off your left atrial appendage (LAA), a small sac in the muscle wall of your left atrium (top left chamber of your heart). Removing it or closing it off can reduce your risk of stroke and eliminate the need to take blood-thinning medication.

Occlusion of the left atrial appendage can be achieved from outside the heart (the Lariat device) or from inside the heart (endovascular) with a blood-exposed implant (the Watchman and Amulet devices). The first method is a form of ligation that eliminates perfusion of the LAA.
