  1. When a hen mates, the rooster's sperm penetrates the egg and the blastodisc, a tiny white spot which carries the chick's DNA, becomes fertilised. It's then called the blasto derm. The blastoderm is what becomes the chick, if the egg is incubated at the right temperature and humidity levels. Crack an egg into a dish and examine the yolk.

If the hen has mated with a rooster, the yolk is now fertilized. Then, the yolk travels down the oviduct into the magnus and it is now covered in the vitelline membrane, layers of albumin, this is the scientific name for the egg white, and fibers.

Once the rooster DNA is delivered to the hen DNA in the germinal disc, they fuse and become a zygote (fertilized seed). It takes about 5 hours for cell division to start, and at this point, it is called a blastoderm or embryo. Cell division and expansion continue unabated as the now fertile egg goes through all the stages necessary to make an egg.

Fertile eggs can be collected from hens who are housed with a rooster. Eggs sold in grocery stores are not fertile; therefore, they will not grow into baby chicks if placed in an incubator. Fertilized eggs usually need to be ordered from a hatchery or from poultry farmers with roosters in their flocks.

However, chicken eggs can either be fertile or infertile, depending on whether a hen has been mating with a rooster. Chickens can only lay fertile eggs if they mate with a rooster. Chickens that don’t mate with a rooster will always lay infertile eggs.
