There are three types of diabetes, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused by a pancreas that doesn’t produced enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes is caused by cells that don’t respond to insulin, also known as insulin resistance. Gestational diabetes is caused by high blood sugar in pregnant women.

Diabetes is a condition that happens when the body can't use glucose (a type of sugar) normally. Glucose comes from the carbohydrates we eat and is the main source of energy for all the cells in the body. A hormone called insulin (which is made in the pancreas) helps glucose get into the cells.

Interesting Facts about Diabetes Insulin was discovered by Dr. Frederick Banting and John Macleod in 1921. Prior to this, diabetes was a fatal disease. The first person to receive an insulin injection was a fourteen year-old boy in 1922. Many people are able to use insulin pumps to automatically deliver insulin.
