The formula for a chandelier size over a table is: Table width in inches – 12 = maximum chandelier width This formula works if you have a square or circular table. For example, if you have a 42-inch square or circular table, you want a 30-inch wide chandelier.

I like to use this formula: the chandelier should be 12 inches smaller than the table width (or diameter if it’s a round table). Width of the table – 12 inches = Chandelier size Example: if your dining room table is 42 inches wide, your chandelier should be 30 inches in diameter (42 – 12 = 30).

You take the width of your table and subtract 12 inches. If your table is 36 inches wide the width of the perfect chandelier size would be 24 inches wide. For the length of the table you want to make sure that the chandelier’s length is at least 12 inches less than the table.

To calculate the chandelier diameter, add the width and length of the dining table in feet. The chandelier diameter should be approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of the width of the dining table. Make sure the bottom of the chandelier is at least 30 inches above the table surface to avoid obstructing the view.

The rules for round, square, and rectangle tables are the same for length/diameter but with rectangle tables there is a formula also for width. Ideal chandelier diameter for round or square table is ⅓ to ½ the diameter of your table. Example: 5’ round/square table with (60”) diameter x.3 = 20” and multiplying by.5 = 30”.
