Emergency responders were called to the No Dogs Left Behind animal shelter in Canton, New York, after a passerby saw flames. The Canton Fire Department and other responders arrived on the scene shortly after 1 a.m.

Canton: More than 40 dogs were killed on Thursday when a fire swept through a rescue organisation’s kennels in northern New York, authorities said. The fire at the No Dogs Left Behind building at the Maple Ridge Kennels in Canton was reported at about 1 am by a person who saw the flames while passing by the property, fire officials said.

The dogs had just been rescued from an alleged "dog trafficker," officials said. The Canton Fire Department said a passerby spotted flames coming from the No Dogs Left Behind building shortly before 1 a.
