The St. Tammany Fishing Pier is a testament to the resilience of the citizens of St. Tammany Parish. After Hurricane Katrina destroyed the original I-10 Twinspans, then Parish President Kevin Davis decided to repurpose the structure for public use. The Parish worked cooperatively with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to see the plan through to fruition. After securing funding through local, state and federal sources, the 650 foot pier was opened to the public in June of 2012, making history as the first public fishing pier in the region since the 1960s. However, when Hurricane Isaac hit in 2012, the pier was damaged, and was subsequently closed. Repairs to the pier were complete in December of 2013, and the Pier reopened to the public in January of 2014. This is the first phase of a mutli-phase project.
