Can it be done in a low clearance vehicle? Are there paved roads?
A:
south unit has lots of unpaved roads, DO NOT drive across the river on the unpaved ones, too rough. North unit (north of Taos) is all paved easy for any vehicle

Yes, there is signage and there are maps available at the visitor's center, which is not always open, and at pay stations along the paved road.
