Amazing place to visit especially during the tulip season. Butterfly pass is cool. They hold birthdays and weddings in there too. Full review by Lale M

By all means, thinking, planning and making plans well in advance can often be rewarded and I commend you for that. All the same, to answer your specific question, I'd suggest that you consult the Garden's web-site and - if that proves unsatisfactory, give 'em a call. What I can tell you is that the Iowa State University of Science and Technology usually begins their fall-term around the 3rd week of August and certainly before Labor Day; therefore, that first week in September is likely to have lots going on in and around ISU. Although neither the football nor basketball seasons will have begun yet, if you're locked into those dates, I'd suggest going to the Garden's web-site and the University's web-site to see what their calendars have posted so far. Also, if you're going to need accommodations, it's never too early to check and see what sort of availability and rates you might be looking at. If there'a major conference on campus overlapping with the time you intend to visit, you might want to book [though not necessarily pay for] your reservations sooner than later - being sure to check the hotel's cancellation policy.

Is there anything going on October 21 weekend

There are no events on the calendar for this weekend. However, there is a home football game Saturday. Figure on congestion and limited parking. Sunday would b a much better choice.
