My family and I are staying in an AirB&B at Piazza del Popolo for 5 days. Is there a grocery store or market within walking distance where we can buy some basic food and snack items?
A:
Yes, just ask your host for the closest one. There is a Valeri Alimentari and further away a Carrefour Express for example.
Q:

I don't think many tours originate from the P del P. Don't know about your Pompei day trip. Most originate from Termini, Rome's Central Railway Station. Best way to get from FCO to P del P is Fiumicino Express (train) to Termini and then get a taxi from there. Hotels in this area are v. v. expensive and beyond my budget. Most of them are in the Via Nazionale, one of the 3 streets that radiate southwards from P del P.

With the apparent strikes and difficulties maintaining city transportation, I want to emphasize that we, a family of four, walked from Piazza del Popolo. Our condo was just across the river and we walked the ten minutes east to Popolo and headed south from there. To be sure, it was a brisk walk and we did it in the morning - there were TONS of people on the sidewalks. We never felt unsafe. We stopped to see obelisks and sites on a tourist map, and walked all the way down to Vittoriano. It took about 30 minutes. After riding up to the top and viewing the city (a MUST), we continued down southwest to the Jewish quarter and across the river to Trastevere. We ate dinner there (reviewed in that thread) and, because it was after dark by the time we finished, we took a 15 min harrowing cab ride back to our place by Popolo. We also walked from our Popolo area condo to the Vatican in about 15 minutes. Next day we waked from Popolo to Castel St. Angelo, and south across the bridge to Piazza Navona, Campo dei' Fiori, The Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and back to Popolo in time for dinner. And we stopped at many sites along the path each day. The area immediately south from Popolo is packed, and I mean packed in every alleyway and thoroughfare, with pizza places, gelato places, shops, sit down restaurants on the sidewalks and alleyways (see my Rome reviews). You don't have to go far from Popolo to have a wonderful time any time of day. Piazza del Popolo is the northern entry to the city and is dedicated to "the People" of Rome. It's no wonder it makes a good anchor from which to see the city on foot. We're mid-life ages and our kids are young teens. If you're able to walk, stroll really, for several hours a day you don't need public transport to see the vast majority of Rome from Popolo.
