N44 = Fast ratio option (could be ordered on manual or power steering) On Z/28 only, there was a "special fast ratio" PS option that was faster than normal fast ratio. I believe the standard and optional ratios were available in the Z/28 too.

WEBFeb 19, 2006 · 10180 posts · Joined 1999. #15 · Feb 21, 2006. I'm going back and reading some Camaro books, they say the "Special Fast" steering was for the Z/28 allright, but it was the manual box. Std manual ratio was 24:1 gear box, = 28:1 overall ratio. RPO N44 manual was 21.4:1 overall.

The 350 with a 3.08 will launch better & turn less Rpms at speed than the 3.55 gear & glide. The 1.82 ratio is a 6 cylinder glide a v8 glide is 1.76 that times 3.55 is 6.248 even less ratio.

WEBSep 1, 2006 · There really wasn't a fast ratio box installed in firstgen's, steering ratio was changed by juggling the length of the levers (steering arms and pitman arms.) Many here (including me) have upgraded our cars to a more modern feel by installing a "Thirdgen box" (SEARCH TERM!!!) The box to use is a late 80's IROC Z or Trans Am WS6.
